Can you really make gas-station slushies at home without ice? With the Ninja Slushi, yes, as long as your drink has enough sugar. This take is research-based: Ninja's own specs and manual, plus published tests from Wirecutter, BBC Good Food, CHOICE and Tom's Guide, not hands-on testing. Wirecutter's long-term test, updated in August 2025, found it lives up to the hype and was still going strong after a year.

How it works

There's no ice. You pour a drink straight into the vessel, pick a program and wait. Inside, an auger keeps the liquid moving around a chilled cylinder, so it freezes into fine, even slush instead of a solid block. When it's ready, you pull the handle on the front and fill your glass.

Programs and capacity

There are five programs, for slush, frozen juice, spiked slush for cocktails, frappé and milkshake. Wirecutter used all five, from Coke slush to frosé, and found it works quite well most of the time. It takes up to sixty-four ounces of liquid, which Ninja says is about seven servings, and once frozen it holds the drink at the right temperature for up to twelve hours, so a batch made before a party lasts all afternoon. The parts are dishwasher safe, and there's a rinse cycle for quick cleanups.

The honest catch

It needs real sugar, at least four percent by Ninja's manual. Diet soda and artificial sweeteners won't freeze, and Tom's Guide ran a sugar-free squash for nearly two hours with no slush. It takes fifteen minutes to an hour. CHOICE measured about fifty decibels, strong cocktails can stay liquid, and it's big, about seventeen inches tall and twenty-four pounds, with a few inches of space needed around it to vent.

Slushi or a blender?

Slushi or a blender? A blender with ice is instant, but the ice waters the drink down and the texture is chunky. The Slushi freezes the drink itself, so the flavor stays full and the texture smooth. It's a splurge for one job, so it makes the most sense if you'll use it every weekend. For big crowds, Ninja also makes the larger Slushi Twist.

Our verdict

If you love frozen drinks and host often, the Ninja Slushi is worth it, and it's a fun holiday gift. If you only drink diet or zero-sugar, or you're short on counter space, skip it.
