Is the Ninja CREAMi Swirl the one to get, or is the CREAMi Deluxe enough? If real swirled soft serve at home is the whole point, get the Swirl. If you mostly want scoops, skip it. This take is research-based: Ninja's own specs, plus published tests from Eater, TechRadar, Tom's Guide and CNN Underscored, not hands-on testing.

How it works: like every CREAMi, you start with a base, such as milk and sugar, a protein shake or fruit, and freeze it in the pint for about twenty-four hours. The paddle spins down through the frozen block in one to six minutes, depending on the program. For soft serve, you pull the handle on the side and it presses the treat out through a nozzle in a swirl.

It has thirteen one-touch programs: six for soft serve, including frozen custard, frozen yogurt and fruit whip, six classic scoop programs like gelato, sorbet and milkshakes, plus a mix-in setting. You can even re-spin store-bought ice cream and dispense it as soft serve. CreamiFit handles low-calorie, high-protein treats, and Tom's Guide said its protein soft serve came out smooth and creamy on the first try.

The honest catch: every base needs about a day in the freezer, it's loud (Tom's Guide measured eighty-four decibels), and it's big, about seventeen and a half inches tall and over twenty pounds, so measure under your cabinets. A neat swirl takes practice, lower-fat bases sometimes need a re-spin, and only two pints come in the box.

Swirl or Deluxe? The Deluxe has eleven programs and bigger twenty-four ounce pints for scoops and drinks, but no soft serve. Eater's take: if you don't need soft serve, a classic CREAMi or the Deluxe can do almost everything else for less.

Our verdict: if soft serve is the whole point, the Ninja CREAMi Swirl is the one to get, and it's a fun family gift. Mostly scoops? Get the Deluxe.
