  • Removable tray over one deep main bin
  • About 23.5 lb empty

Hauling tools from the truck to the job in three trips? A rolling tool box turns that into one, and the DEWALT ToughSystem 2.0 Rolling Tool Box, model DWST08450, is built to be the bottom of a whole stack. This written review is based on DEWALT's published specs; we haven't tested it hands-on.

Who it's for

It's for contractors, serious DIYers and anyone who moves a heavy kit between a garage, a truck bed and a work site. It's also a good fit if you already own ToughSystem boxes, because DEWALT says it's backwards compatible with the ToughSystem line.

The specs that matter

Eight-inch all-terrain wheels, a wide telescoping handle that extends to about thirty-nine inches, and a 250-pound load capacity. DEWALT rates it IP65, which means dust-tight and protected against water jets, so a sudden downpour on the job shouldn't soak your drills. Inside there's a removable tray for bits and small tools above one deep main bin.

What makes it a system

Patented auto-connect side latches click other ToughSystem 2.0 boxes on top with one hand, so you can roll a small box, a large box and this base around as one tower. Two-piece metal front latches keep the lid shut, and a detachable back handle lets it sit flat in a pickup bed.

The honest catch

It's heavy before you put anything in it, at about twenty-three and a half pounds, and a full tower gets hard to lift into a truck. It's one big bin with a tray, not a set of drawers, so small parts need organizers. DEWALT lists no built-in lock. And it only stacks with ToughSystem gear, so if your shop is already built around Milwaukee PACKOUT, stay in that system.

Our verdict

If you want a rugged, weatherproof rolling base and you're starting, or already using, ToughSystem 2.0, this is the box to build on. If you need drawers or you're committed to another brand's system, look elsewhere.
